How many types of IELTS tests are there?

1. IELTS Academic

The IELTS Academic test is for students who are interested in pursuing their higher education overseas. Hence, it is designed to assess whether a test taker is ready and able to use English as a medium of study.

2. IELTS General Training

IELTS General Training is for people who wish to live and work abroad in an English-speaking country. It focuses mainly on assessing a person’s proficiency, confidence and comfort when communicating in English in daily situations that they are likely to encounter in a native English-speaking environment.

Both types of tests include four sections: Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing. The Listening and Speaking sections are the same for both tests, while there are slight variations in the Reading and Writing sections based on the test type.

IELTS Test Format in Detail:

Breakdown of what falls into each section:

Listening (Approx. 30 minutes + 10 mins transfer time)
This section has 40 questions based on four recordings of native English speakers. These include conversations in social and educational settings, as well as monologues on everyday topics and academic subjects. Question types include multiple choice, matching, diagram labelling, and various completion tasks.

Reading (60 minutes)
This section contains 40 questions based on three passages. Academic Reading uses long, complex texts from sources like books and journals, while General Training Reading features shorter texts related to social survival, the workplace, and general interest. Question types vary and include multiple choice, True/False/Not Given, matching, completion, and short answers.

Writing (60 minutes)
  • Academic Task 1: Requires describing or summarizing visual information like graphs or diagrams (min. 150 words).
  • Academic Task 2: An essay responding to a viewpoint, argument, or issue (min. 250 words).
  • General Training Task 1: Writing a letter for various purposes (min. 150 words).
  • General Training Task 2: An essay on a general interest topic (min. 250 words).
Task 2 accounts for a larger portion of the score than Task 1.

Speaking (11–14 minutes)
This is a face-to-face/video call interview with an examiner. It includes an introduction and general questions (Part 1), a short presentation on a given topic after preparation time (Part 2), and a discussion of related abstract issues (Part 3).
